If you are coming to Pushkaralu specifically to perform rites for your parents or grandparents, this is where you need to be. The state has designated Gowthami Ghat for Tarpanam and Pinda Pradanam.
Pushkaralu is one of the most significant times to perform ancestral rites. According to the scriptures, offering Tarpanam on the banks of the Godavari during this twelve-day window satisfies ancestors for generations.
While you can perform these rites at any ghat, doing it at Kotilingala is a logistical nightmare. It is too loud, too crowded, and the priests are rushed.
Why Gowthami Ghat is different: The government has recognized this and turned Gowthami Ghat into a dedicated zone for Pitru Karma. For 2027, over 200 priests have been officially accredited by the Endowments Department and stationed here.
The ghat has been designed for privacy and focus. There are designated sitting areas away from the main bathing rush, allowing you to perform the rituals with the proper reverence and without being stepped on.
Do not rely on buying everything at the last minute. While vendors sell kits, bringing your own ensures you have exactly what your family tradition requires.
If you forget something, there are stalls right outside the ghat that sell ready-made kits for ₹100 to ₹300.
Because there are hundreds of pilgrims waiting, you might feel pressured to finish quickly. Don't be. The ritual takes 15–30 minutes depending on how many ancestors you are invoking. Agree on the dakshina (fee) before he begins so there are no arguments later.
When sitting on the steps, ensure you are facing the water (which flows east here). Sit on a flat stone or a mat, not directly in the water.
The offerings (rice, sesame) go into the river. Do not throw plastic bags, flower wrappers, or cloth into the water. Use the bins provided.
| Starting Point | Distance | Best Option | Cost & Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rajahmundry Railway Station | 3 km | Auto Rickshaw | 12-15 mins · ₹100 |
| Kotilingala Ghat | 1.5 km | Walk / Shuttle | 15 mins walk |
Because Gowthami Ghat is adjacent to the main Kotilingala area, the same parking restrictions apply. You will need to walk the final kilometer. Follow the signs for "Pitru Karma" or ask a volunteer.
