If you are travelling with children, Basar is the most important stop in Telangana. It is home to the Gnana Saraswati Temple, and taking a holy dip here during Pushkaralu is considered the perfect time to start a child's education.
Basar is located in the Nirmal district of Telangana, situated on the banks of the Godavari river. It is one of the most peaceful and spiritually focused hubs of the festival.
Unlike the massive crowds of Rajahmundry or the political importance of Bhadrachalam, Basar's focus is on Gnana (Knowledge). The ancient Gnana Saraswati Temple here is believed to be the place where Sage Vyasa installed the idols of Goddess Saraswati.
The Aksharabhyasam Ritual: Because of the temple's association with education, lakhs of parents bring their children (usually aged 3 to 5) here to perform Aksharabhyasam—the ritual of writing the first letter on the child's tongue with turmeric or honey. The Telangana government has upgraded the Basar ghat specifically to handle families performing this ritual.
The temple is just a short walk from the river ghat. During Pushkaralu, the temple administration makes special arrangements for families arriving for the holy dip and the Aksharabhyasam ritual.
If you are performing the ritual for your child, here is what you need to know:
| Starting Point | Distance | Best Option | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyderabad | 200 km | Train (Hyderabad-Nanded line) | 4 hours |
| Bhadrachalam | 150 km | Bus or Private Car | 3.5 hours |
Important: Unlike Bhadrachalam, Basar actually has its own railway station (Basar - BSX). Direct trains run from Hyderabad and Nizamabad. The temple and ghat are just a short auto ride from the station.
